Excellence in Education: ILS Director Dr. Denise Lucy Receives Education Award
The San Rafael Chamber of Commerce has selected Dr. Denise Lucy, professor of Business and Organizational Studies and founder and executive director of the Institute of Leadership Studies at Dominican University of California, as one of the recipients of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Awards for 2016-2017.
Dr. Lucy was acknowledged along with the other honorees at an award ceremony on Wednesday, May 17, at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.
Dr. Lucy has more than 35 years of experience in higher education as an educator and executive at both Dominican and the University of San Francisco. Dr. Lucy directs Dominican’s leadership development center: The Institute for Leadership Studies (ILS) in the Barowsky School of Business. She teaches and consults in leadership and team development, organizational change, negotiation and conflict management, business communications, business and society.
Some of her former roles at Dominican include Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Liberal and Professional Studies, and Associate Dean. She also was Associate Dean and Director of Marketing and Corporate Development at the University of San Francisco’s College of Professional Studies.
Dr. Lucy’s research interests include leading small business export enterprises, leadership development, business education, micro-finance poverty reduction, corporate social responsibility and civic engagement.
Dr. Lucy was inducted into the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011. The University of San Francisco awarded her both Edward Griffin Award for Outstanding Service in Education and its Merit Award. Dr. Lucy received the Joseph R. Fink Faculty Achievement Award in 2016 and the Presidential Medallion in 2002.
In 1993, Dr. Lucy earned her doctorate in Organizations and Leadership and a graduate certificate in Educational Computing and from the University of San Francisco. She earned her M.S. from California State University, Fresno and her B.S. degree from Michigan State University.
The San Rafael Chamber Education Committee has honored more than 100 deserving recipients with these awards over the past 18 years. The committee consists of education leaders from the San Rafael and Dixie School Districts, independent schools, Dominican, and College of Marin. The business members include representatives from businesses with a long history of supporting education and individual members passionate about the interests of business and education.
